Five Players in Double Figures Lead No. 14 Men's Basketball Past Millersville, 105-65

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Nov. 22, 2008) – Five players scored in double figures as the Pioneers rolled to a 105-65 victory over the visiting Millersville Marauders in non-conference men's basketball on Saturday afternoon.
C.W. Post improves to 2-0 on the season while Millersville suffers its first loss and slips to 2-1. The Pioneers last hit the century mark in points on Nov. 25, 2006 when they defeated Lock Haven University, 101-71.
C.W. Post jumped out to a quick 12-3 lead after three consecutive three-pointers by
Kevin Spann (West Babylon, N.Y.),
Kenny Burkes (Suitland, Md.), and
Nick Carter (Huntington Station, N.Y.) just 1:48 into the first half.
The Marauders would pull to 14-11 after a three-pointer from Jason Blake, but the Pioneers used a 13-7 run to push their lead to nine with 10:56 remaining in the first half.
With two minutes remaining in the first half,
Jonathan Schmidt (Centereach, N.Y.) was fouled on a three-point attempt and made all three free throw, putting the Pioneers up by 15 points, 50-35. Carter's layup thirty seconds later gave the Pioneers a 17-point lead. Two free throw by Rob Coney cut the deficit to 15 points, but Burkes hit a three with five seconds remaining in the half to give the Pioneers an 18-point lead heading into the half.
C.W. Post continued to dominate in the second half, outscoring the Marauders 50-28 in the half. They stretched their lead to 27 after three pointers by Spann, Burkes and Spann again, and two converted free throws by Schmidt with 16:38 to go in the second half. The Pioneers easily rolled to a win, leading by as many as 42 points in the second half.
Burkes led all scorers with 22 points, five assists and three rebounds. Schmidt chipped in with 18 points, a game-high nine assists, and eight rebounds, while Carter added 18 points, followed by Spann with 17.
Roberto Macklin (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) rounded out the scoring with 13 points and added eight rebounds.
The Pioneers scored 22 points of Millersville turnovers, and doubled up the Maruaders in the paint, outscoring them 40-20. CWP shot 48.6% from the field (35-for-72) , 45.2% from behind the arc, and 80% from the free throw line, helped by a 9-for-9 effort from Schmidt from the charity stripe.
For the Marauders, Makal Stibbins notched a double-double with 11 rebounds and 10 points, respectively, along with 18 points from Palmer McDurfee and 11 from Zach Bauermaster.
The Pioneers will next travel to Queens, on Dec. 3 for a 7 p.m. matchup and their East Coast Conference opener. The next home game will be Dec. 6 versus St. Thomas Aquinas, at 3:30 p.m.
