BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Dec. 6, 2008)- C.W. Post used a 12-0 run to start the first half, and a 12-5 run to begin the second half, and for the third game in a row, had four players score in double figures, as the 10th-ranked Pioneers posted a 87-57 victory over the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas on Saturday afternoon East Coast Conference Men's Basketball action.
The Pioneers improved to 4-0 on the season and 2-0 in the ECC, while STAC slips to 3-4 and 1-1 in conference action.
Nick Carter (Huntington Station, N.Y.) got the Pioneers' day started as he hit a jumper followed by a trey, putting the Pioneers up 5-0. A layup by
Kenny Burkes (Suitland, Md.) a three-pointer from
Jonathan Schmidt (Centereach, N.Y.) and a layup by
Kevin Spann (West Babylon, N.Y.) had the Pioneers with a 12-0 lead at the 15:11 mark.
The Spartans used a 14-4 run of their own to pull within two (16-14) after Jelani Winfield hit a three-pointer, but the Pioneers used treys by Spann and Schmidt, a three-point play from
Lyndon Daniel (St. George's, Grenada), and another layup by Schmidt to push their lead back to 13, leading 27-14 at the six-minute mark. The Spartans were unable to make any sizable dent into the Pioneer lead as C.W. Post went into the half leading 36-23.
The Pioneers used a 12-5 run at the beginning of the second half to push their lead to 22 points after Carter's jumper at 15:52. C.W. Post was in firm control the rest of the game, extending their lead to 30 points (69-39) after a layup from Burkes, and a game-high 34-point lead (86-52) after an
Aaron Daly (New York, N.Y.) layup with 2:11 remaining in the game.
The Pioneers cleaned up in the paint and on the glass, outscoring the Spartans 44-14 in the paint, and holding a 38-30 rebounding advantage. For the game, CWP shot 54.7% from the field (35-of-64) and 38.5% from downtown (10-of-26). The Pioneers took advantage of 22 Spartan turnovers, scoring 25 points off of STAC miscues. They also held a 12-4 edge in fast-break points and a 16-10 advantage in second chance points.
Schmidt paced the Pioneers with a game-high19 points including five treys, and Carter was right behind him with 19 points. Daniel chipped in with 16 points and seven rebounds, while Burkes had an excellent all-around game with 14 points, nine assists, and seven rebounds. Spann added eight assists and four steals.
St. Thomas Aquinas was led by Ahmed Allen with 17 points.
C.W. Post will next play at Mercy on Dec. 10 at 7 p.m.
