Karlsen's Three-Hit Shutout Leads Baseball Past Molloy, 4-0

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (May 4, 2008) - Keith Karlsen (Farmingdale, N.Y.) pitched a complete game, three-hit shutout, as the Pioneers used timely hitting to roll to a 4-0 victory over Molloy College on Sunday afternoon. Prior to the game, the team honored their nine seniors:
Steve Algarroba (Astoria, N.Y.),
Anthony Rinaldi (Levittown, N.Y.),
Brian Chenicek (Levittown, N.Y.), Karlsen,
Mike Sylvester (Farmingdale, N.Y.),
Tim Sylvester (Farmingdale, N.Y.),
Kevin Gerard (Levittown, N.Y.),
Jamie Garland (East Meadow, N.Y.) and
Joe Mare (Whitestone, N.Y.) for their accomplishments on the field over the past four seasons.
The win pushes the Pioneer overall record back to even at 25-25, and gives them a 16-11 record in the ECC, while Molloy drops to 27-20 and 15-12 in conference play.
The Pioneers touched starter Brian Powers for a run in the first, as
Mike Sylvester led off the game with a single, moved to second on
Bryan Bonin's (Commack, N.Y.) sacrifice bunt, and scored on
Kyle Walker's (Wantagh, N.Y.) double down the left field line.
Walker singled in the sixth to lead off the inning and moved to second on a sacrifice by
Brian Anderson (Nesconset, N.Y.) and then third on a groundout by Chenicek. Walker scored on
Mike Callaghan's (East Meadow, N.Y.) RBI single up the middle, and after a walk to Testa, Algarroba placed a perfect bunt between the pitcher and the first baseman. Powers rushed the throw to first and it got away from first baseman Keith Kenny, allowing Walker to score from second on the error for a 3-0 Pioneer lead.
Another insurance run in the eighth came on Algarroba's sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Anderson, who had led off the inning with a walk.
Karlsen was strong in the nine-inning effort, not allowing a runner past second the entire game. He struck out eight batters and issued only two walks.
Powers allowed a run on four hits as he took the loss for Molloy.
Mike Sylvester and Walker each went 2-for-4 in the game, and
Bruce Testa (Glen Cove, N.Y.), Bonin and Callaghan each added hits, while Testa and Callaghan each drove in run.
The Pioneers await the seedings for the upcoming East Coast Conference tournament held May 7-11.
