BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Jan. 17, 2009) –
Five players scored in double figures as third-ranked men's basketball dispatched NYIT, 91-79, on Saturday afternoon in East Coast Conference men's basketball action.
The win keeps the Pioneers perfect at 12-0 and 6-0 in conference play, while NYIT falls to 8-7 and 3-3 in ECC action.
The Pioneers jumped out to an early 9-0 lead and led 18-2 after a jumper by junior Lyndon Daniel (St. George's, Grenada), but NYIT mounted a comeback and trimmed the lead to 24-15 after Daniel Berg's trey.
The teams traded buckets as the Pioneers pushed their lead back to 10 (32-22) at 6:13 on Roberto Macklin 's dunk, but the Bears again clawed back, cutting the Pioneer lead to only three points, 34-31, following a three-pointer from Benny Flores at 3:14. The teams battled back and forth and the Pioneers were able to push their lead back to seven after Macklin's trey at the one minute mark, but a jumper by NYIT's Carl Kindburg cut the lead to five heading into the half.
CWP opened the half with a traditional three point play from senior guard Nick Carter (Huntington Station, N.Y.) and quickly put themselves up by 10, 55-45 after another trey by Macklin at 14:12. A 9-0 run in just under a minute and a half was capped by Jonathan Schmidt's lay-in, and saw the Pioneers push to a 16 point lead, 64-48, with 12:17 remaining to play.
But the Bears were still not done threatening, as they chipped away at what was as much as a 17-point lead, and cut the score to 79-71 with 4:47 on the clock. However, 9-of-10 shooting from the charity stripe in the last two minutes iced the win for the Pioneers as they finished with a 12-point victory.
Carter paced the team with 19 points, and Macklin was close behind with 18 points. The pair combined to shoot 14-of-17 from the floor, and 5-of-7 from behind the arc. Schmidt added 16 points and a game-high nine assists, Kenny Burkes (Suitland, Md.) added 16 points of his own, and Kevin Spann chipped with a 10-point effort. Daniel led the Pioneers on the boards with 9 rebounds.
Byrant Lassiter and Arthur Braswell each scored 15 points for the Bears, and Mickell Vickers chipped with 10, respectively.
CWP shot a sizzling 63.0% from the floor for the game, hitting 34-of-54, and 42.9% from downtown (9-of-21). The Bears held a slight edge, 30-27 in rebounding, and shot 52.6% from the floor (30-of-57).
Head coach Tim Cluess and the Pioneers take to the road for their next two games, a 7 p.m. matchup at Molloy College on Wednesday, Jan. 21, and follow with a trip to Dowling College for a 3 p.m. game on Saturday, Jan. 24 at 3 p.m.
