Schmidt and Carter Lead No. 2 Men's Basketball Past Dowling, 88-62

OAKDALE, N.Y. (Jan. 24, 2009) - Jonathan Schmidt (Centereach, N.Y.) and
Nick Carter (Huntington Station, N.Y.) combined to score 50 points as the second-ranked Pioneers shot past Dowling College, 88-62, on Saturday afternoon in East Coast Conference men's basketball action.
The Pioneers remain undefeated at 14-0 (8-0 ECC), while the loss puts the Golden Lions at a 7-10 clip and 5-3 in the ECC.
The game started out as a tight contest, with the teams tying up the score at 7-7 at 16:58 after Dowling's Sean Smith hit a trey. At 15:09, a layup by Schmidt tied the score again at 9-9. The game continued back and forth as the Golden Lions pulled ahead of the Pioneers, 12-11 on a free trhow by Elon Howard. However, the Pioneers answered right back with a
Kevin Spann (West Babylon, N.Y.) lay-in to take a 13-12 lead.
Another layup by Spann gave the Pioneers a 15-12 edge and the lead quickly doubled to six points. Less then two minutes later the Pioneers opened up a 12 point lead, 26-14 with 8:10 remaining in the half. The Golden Lions were able to cut the lead to single digits 31-22, after a trey by John Merchant with 3:56 remaining, but the Pioneers quickly pushed ahead again and led by as many as 16 points, 40-24 with one minute remaining in the half, and they took a 13 point lead, 42-29, into the halftime break.
The Pioneers came charging out of the break and were up by as many as 25 points after a layup by Spann. Dowling mounted a comeback attempt, and they were able to cut the lead to a 13 point gap with 5:49 remaining, but the Pioneers once again took over and pushed the lead back to 20, where it would remain for the rest of the game as the Pioneers rolled to the 26-point victory.
Schmidt scored 26 points to lead C.W. Post on 9-of-14 shooting, including 4-of-7 from behind the arc. Carter added 24 points on 7-of-14 shooting and hit 9-of-10 from the charity stripe, while Spann chipped in with 14 points.
The Pioneers shot 49.1% from the field (26-of-53) and outrebounded the Golden Lions, 35-27.
David Seagers II scored 17 points for the Golden Lions, respectively.
