22 In a Row For Men's Basketball; Pioneers Defeat Molloy 95-56

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Feb. 21, 2009) – Four players in double figures led second-ranked C.W. Post to its 22nd consecutive win, jumping out to a first half lead and never looking back as the Pioneers coasted to a 95-56 victory over the Molloy Lions in ECC men's basketball action on Saturday afternoon.
The game was essentially over before it began as the Pioneers jumped out to margins of 5-0, followed by 11-2, and then 24-4 at the 10:30 mark, building a 20-point cushion. The lead dropped to 15 pints with 3:42 remaining in the half, but the Pioneer offense quickly pushed ahead and C.W. Post went into half time with a 40-19 lead. Senior guard
Jonathan Schmidt's 17 points in the first half paced the Pioneers.
The second half was much of the same as the Lions again pulled to within 15 points, 44-29, but the Pioneers quickly powered the scoring margin back into the 20's, pushing their lead to 30 points at the 7:40 mark (72-42) and ending the game with a 39 point victory.
CWP was led once again by Schmidt, who, at 1,818 total points, is now 18 points shy of breaking Garee Bryant's all-time career points record 1,835 points. The senior rounded out the stat sheet with nine rebounds and four assists.
Kevin Spann (West Babylon, N.Y. ) chipped in with 14 points and four assists,
Nick Carter (Huntington Station, N.Y.) added 13 points and six assists, and
Kenny Burkes (Suitland, Md.) chipped in with 10 points.
The Pioneers held a 43-31 advantage on the boards, and shot 49% from the floor (17-32) and 80% from the charity stripe (24-30), while hitting 13-of-31 shots from behind the arc (41%). They held a 26-14 advantage in the paint, and a 28-12 edge in points scored off turnovers.
Brian Hutchinson scored 12 points and Girard Fitts scored 11 for the Lions.
C.W. Post is back in action for senior day on Wednesday at 7 p.m. as they take on Dowling College in an ECC matchup.
