No. 2 Men's Basketball Wins 18th Straight, Defeats Mercy 87-43

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Feb. 7, 2009) – Bolstered by five starters scoring in double figures, the second-ranked C.W. Post men's basketball team jumped out to an early lead and never looked back as they rolled past Mercy, 87-43, in East Coast Conference action on Saturday afternoon at the Pratt Recreation Center.
The Pioneers, winners of 18 straight and with a 12-0 record in ECC play, quickly jumped out to a 12-3 lead just three minutes into the game following a trey bysenior
Nick Carter (Huntington Station, N.Y.).
They increased the lead to 22-5 at the 13:35 mark after
Jonathan Schmidt (Centereach, N.Y.)hit a jumper, and the lead hovered around 20 points for the remainder of the half, as the Pioneers went into the break with a 47-25 advantage.
The Mavericks were unable to catch up in the second half as the Pioneers increased their lead to 25, then 30 points following a trey from Schmidt at 8:44. C.W. Post wrapped up the victory by outscoring the Mavericks 40-18 in the second half.
Roberto Macklin (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.)led all scorers with 19 points and paced the Pioneers on the boards with nine rebounds. Carter added 16 points on 5-of-8 shooting and a perfect 4-of-4 effort from the charity stripe. Schmidt flirted with a triple-double, scoring 15 points and grabbing eight rebounds while dishing nine assists.
Kenny Burkes (Suitland, Md.)added 10 points and four steals and
Kevin Spann (West Babylon, N.Y.) chipped in with 11 points and four steals.
Mercy was led by Justin McMullen and Jimmy Gunville with 14 and 13 point efforts.
C.W. Post outscored the Mavericks in the paint, 38-22, and also held a sizeable 27-8 advantage in points off turnovers. C.W. Post also outrebounded the visitors by a 37-19 margin.
The Pioneers will continue league play on Wednesday, Feb. 11 as they take on Concordia in Bronxville, N.Y., for a 7 p.m. start.
