BROOOKVILLE, N.Y. (Feb. 14, 2007) –
In a matchup between the two top teams in the East Coast Conference, the second-ranked C.W. Post men's basketball team came away with a 107-71 win, in the process, clinching the ECC regular-season title on Saturday afternoon at the Pratt Recreation Center.
Jonathan Schmidt (Centereach, N.Y.) scored a season-high 33 points, just missing his career high of 34 points, shooting 13-21 from the field and 5-8 from three-point range. Gilbert Montalvo (Astoria, N.Y.) added a double-double with 10 rebounds and 11 assists, and three other Pioneers scored in double figures as the Pioneers pushed their season-long undefeated streak to 20 games and now sit at 20-0 overall and 14-0 in the conference.
The game was a battle from the start as an upset-minded Bridgeport jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first minute of play. The Pioneers quickly answered with a basket of their own from Lyndon Daniel (St. George's, Grenada), but two more buckets from the Purple Knights pushed the advantage to 9-4 (16:00), then 11-6 (14:57).
Bridgeport maintained their lead until the 10:05 mark, when a trey by Schmidt tied the game at 20 apiece, but the Purple Knights quickly regained the lead with a Steve Martin layup. Back to back jumpers by Montalvo and Schmidt gave the Pioneers their first lead of the game, 24-22, with 7:50 remaining in the half. The Pioneers quickly pushed their advantage to double digits as Kenny Burkes' (Suitland, Md.) layup with 3:14 to play gave the Pioneers a 35-25 lead. A jumper by Montalvo just before the buzzer sent the Pioneers into the break with a 42-28 lead.
The Purple Knighs continued to fight back, coming out of the half and cutting the Pioneer lead to 11 points at the 17:17 mark, but it was as close as they would get, as 10-17 Pioneer shooting from downtown in the second half buried Bridgeport, pushing the lead into the 30-point range for most of the game. C.W. Post rolled to the 36-point victory with a 65-point second half performance.
In addition to Schmidt's 33 points, the senior guard also added seven assists and five boards. Burkes also had an excellent offensive game, scoring 18 points with six assists while shooting a perfect 5-for-5 from the charity stripe. Kevin Spann (West Babylon, N.Y.) added 15 points and five assists, and Nick Carter (Huntington Station, N.Y.) chipped in with 13 points. Daniel pulled down 10 rebounds for C.W. Post.
Teairez Stennis was the leading scorer for UB, with 30 points and eight boars. Dave Boykin and Steve Martin added 14 points apiece.
The Pioneers shot 50% (41-82) from the floor and 46% (13-28) from behind the arc. They held a 56-34 rebounding advantage .
Head coach Tim Cluess and the Pioneers look to continue their winning ways on Wednesday at neighboring NYIT, in a 7:15 p.m. matchup.
